The reboot of RESIDENT EVIL has quietly begun filming and the movie is still adding to its cast. Leading the way is Gotham’s Donal Logue, who will be bringing another classic character from the early video games to the big screen.
Logue has been cast as Chief Brian Irons, a Raccoon City police officer and Chief of Police of the Raccoon Police Department until 1998. Despite his position, Irons was deeply involved in corporate corruption and took bribes from Umbrella U.S.A. to keep the company out of investigations. Other new cast members include Chad Rook and Lily Gao who have joined the film in unspecified supporting roles. They join previously cast announcements that include Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield, Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine, Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia as Leon S. Kennedy, and Neal McDonough as William Birkin.
Plot details are being kept under wraps for the time being but the reboot will take place in 1998 and be an origin story. It seems like the goal is to focus on a story that was largely ignored in the previous iteration of the RESIDENT EVIL franchise and that’s on the night that everything went wrong in Raccoon City. From what I can tell, this adaptation looks to be more faithful to the video game. Despite some creative liberties, the RESIDENT EVIL films lead by Milla Jovovich and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, were massive worldwide hits with a collective gross of $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office. It still stands as the most successful video game franchise to date.
Other than his role on Gotham, Donal Logue is known for his roles in BLADE, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Vikings, and Sons of Anarchy. It will be interesting to see what they do with him as Irons because the character becomes a major antagonist in both Resident Evil 2 and The Darkside Chronicles. Could Logue be making a villain turn? We’ll have to wait and see!
