His Dark Materials, Season 2, HBO Max

Pack your bags, folks, because we’re setting a course for Cittagazze! HBO announced today that His Dark Materials will return for its second season on Monday, November 16th.

Based on The Subtle Knife, Book 2 of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials novel trilogy, the new season picks up after the show’s revelatory Season 1 finale. Here’s the official synopsis for Season 2:

His Dark Materials Season 2 begins after Lord Asriel has opened a bridge to a new world, and, distraught over the death of her best friend, Lyra follows Asriel into the unknown. In a strange and mysterious abandoned city, she meets Will, a boy from our world who is also running from a troubled past. Lyra and Will learn their destinies are tied to reuniting Will with his father but find their path is constantly thwarted as a war begins to brew around them. Meanwhile, Mrs. Coulter searches for Lyra, determined to bring her home by any means necessary.

Returning for more science-driven fantasy adventure are Season 1 cast members Dafne Keen, Ruth Wilson, Amir Wilson, Ariyon Bakare, Andrew Scott, Will Keen, Ruta Gedmintas, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Joining the aforementioned actors for the new season are Terence Stamp, Jade Anouka, and Simone Kirby.

In addition to sharing the show’s upcoming premiere date, HBO also dropped a gorgeous new poster for His Dark Materials Season 2:

While the new season was filmed before the coronavirus pandemic worked its black magic on countless television productions, a standalone episode that would’ve centered on Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) needed to be scrapped due to health concerns. At the end of the day, the new season will consist of just seven episodes.
