Jordan Peele, The People Under the Stairs, Wes Craven, Universal, remake

Halloween isn’t until tomorrow but the best treat that’s bound to land in our bucket this year just been unwrapped. According to Collider, Jordan Peele is set to produce a remake of THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS for Universal, and I am officially freaking out!

Directed by Wes Craven, The People Under the Stairs follows a young boy and two thieves who break into the elaborate home of a deranged couple known as the Robesons to steal their precious coin collection. Once inside the house, the group learns that the couple has been keeping people trapped in their basement for years and that some of them have escaped into the walls. What happens next is a madcap horror satire that features plenty of political commentaries, maddening misdirection, killer dogs, and landowners with shotguns in gimp suits. Seriously, if you’ve never seen this movie, you need to get on it.

Peele will produce the remake alongside Win Rosenfeld via their Monkeypaw Productions studio, and while Peele is not expected to direct the film himself, it has yet to be determined if he and/or Rosenfeld will contribute to the script.

Peele has yet to reveal his third feature as a director, though that hasn’t stopped the in-demand filmmaker from attaching his name to a number of promising projects. When it comes to acting roles, Peele will lend his voice to roles in Henry Selick’s (Coraline, The Nightmare Before Christmas) animated horror-comedy Wendell and Wild, Eban Marlowe’s animated horror film Abruptio as well as the fourth season of Netflix’s animated comedy series Big Mouth.

Personally, I’d give just about anything for Peele to direct Universal’s The People Under the Stairs remake, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. That being my opinion, I trust that someone worthy of reimagining the Wes Craven classic will be assigned to the task. Hey, Universal, if you read this, Let me be an extra in the movie! I could be one of the people trapped in the basement, moaning for the sun, and a chance at eating the hearts of those that had imprisoned me. Think about it. My email is in the Contact Us section. Cheers!
