After a failed FOX pilot and years of development hell, not only has comic book Locke & Key been a hit for Netflix, but it has been picked up for a third season before the second has even debuted. The supernatural thriller from Joe Hill premiered back in 2019 to excellent ratings and will get the chance to dive deeper into the mysteries of Key House. In addition to the renewal, it’s being reported that Locke & Key‘s executive producer and co-showrunner Meredith Averill has inked an overall deal with Netflix for TV and other projects.
Production for the second season of Locke & Key is scheduled to wrap next week in Toronto, with production on Season 3 on the books for early 2021.
“I’m incredibly grateful to have found a home at Netflix where I feel constantly supported, challenged, and inspired,” Averill said. “I look forward to continuing and expanding our relationship.”
Based on the comic book franchise co-created by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, Locke & Key centers around Tyler (Conner Jessup), Kinsey (Emilia Jones), and Bode Locke (Jackson Robert Scott), three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Maine only to find the house contains magical keys that grant them a vast array of potentially dangerous powers and abilities. Before long, the Locke children discover there’s a malevolent demon who dwells in the shadows of their home who desires the keys and will stop at nothing to possess them.
The series stars Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones, Jackson Robert Scott, Darby Stanchfield, Laysla De Oliveira, Aaron Ashmore, Petrice Jones, and Griffin Gluck.
“Carlton and Meredith have built an incredible world in ‘Locke and Key’ and we’re excited to have the Lockes return for more in the third season,” said Brian Wright, vice president of overall deals for Netflix. “I’m delighted to expand our creative partnership with Meredith Averill, a talented creator with a keen eye for best-in-class horror and supernatural storytelling.”
While I wasn’t the biggest fan of Netflix’s Locke & Key, I am genuinely excited to hear that the show will continue for at least two more seasons. If anything, this will give the creative team time to fine-tune the property’s outrageous and otherworldly themes in grand fashion. Plus, the set design for this show is inspired, and I look forward to seeing how more of the keys are represented as the mysteries of Key House unfold.
Season 2 of Locke & Key is expected to be unlocked on Netflix sometime in 2021.
