During the early days of the pandemic, which seems like ten years ago, Netflix’s EXTRACTION emerged as an early stay-at-home favorite. The film quickly became a huge hit for the streamer and soon sequel talk emerged. Now, all these months later, the film’s star Chris Hemsworth has announced that Netflix has plans to make several sequels to one of their most successful original films to date.
Hemsworth made the announcement during his E! People’s Choice Awards acceptance speech where the actor won the ‘Action Movie Star of 2020’ award for his role in the film. After thanking the fans and all those involved with the film, Hemsworth mentioned at the end that they were planning to make more films. Back after the film became a hit on the streamer in April, AVENGERS: ENDGAME director Joe Russo, who served as a producer on the project, quickly confirmed that a follow-up had been greenlit. Not much is known about the sequel except that the plan is to bring back director Sam Hargrave along with lead star Chris Hemsworth. There is also the issue of moving the story forward or backward, as in will it be a sequel or prequel. The ending was a bit loose so I suppose it could g either way but one route seems more logical than the other.
Now, since Hemsworth said they hope to make a couple more of these films, perhaps they can go both routes. Maybe they can make a prequel or a sequel. It’s all speculation at this point but Russo has said after starting writing on the next film that Hemsworth’s character is “a great character to write for, with a fantastic performance from Hemsworth, so it makes my job easier. I think the mission is to up the scale on this one, both emotionally and physically.”
EXTRACTION follows Tyler Rake (Hemsworth), a fearless black market mercenary that embarks on the most deadly extraction of his career when he’s enlisted to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord. The film also stars Randeep Hooda, Golshifteh Farahani, Pankaj Tripathi, and David Harbour.
What route do YOU think future EXTRACTION films will take?
