Wow! Is 2021 poised to become The Year of the Wilson? I ask because after watching the new trailer for the Amazon Original film BLISS, it’s become clear that the comedic actor is set to star in some of the coolest looking releases this side of the new year, especially if you count his role as Mobius M. Mobius for Marvel Studios’ Loki TV series.

Directed and written by Mike Cahill and starring Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek, Bliss is a mind-bending love story following Greg (Owen Wilson) who, after recently being divorced and then fired, meets the mysterious Isabel (Salma Hayek), a woman living on the streets and convinced that the polluted, broken world around them is nothing but a computer simulation. Doubtful at first, Greg eventually discovers there may be some truth to Isabel’s wild conspiracy.

If you’re unfamiliar with Cahill’s cinematic work, please allow me to jog your memory. He directed and co-wrote one of my favorite sci-fi films of the past decade, Another Earth. In this soul-crushing film, humanity discovers a duplicate Earth in the Solar system, and an ambitious young student and an accomplished composer cross paths in a tragic accident. In my opinion, Another Earth is a top-notch sci-fi flick and I highly recommend that you give it a go.

“I wanted to tell a story about the fragility of the mind and the malleability of our perception,” Cahill said in a statement. “I particularly wanted to make a film that treated different ways of seeing the world with compassion and empathy, as opposed to judgment. To me, this is an important bridge of connection humans need and I felt like I had a way to dramatize this idea and make it fun, exciting, thrilling, all while retaining its emotional potency.”

Reality-bending science-fiction with a raw emotional edge? You’re speaking my language right now, Cahill. Let’s go!

Bliss will be making its exclusive Amazon Prime debut on February 5, 2021.
