Per Deadline, Reed Morano (The Handmaid’s Tale) is slated to direct and produce a feature-film adaptation of Yoko Ogawa’s “The Memory Police” for Amazon Studios that will be scripted by Charlie Kaufman (I’M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS). Even without knowing anything more beyond that information, I’m already on board.
The Amazon Studios film will take place on an unnamed island off an unnamed cost where things have begun to disappear. At first it’s little things, like ribbons and roses, but soon grows to include photographs. “However, a rare few are able to remember all that no longer exists – but the Memory Police are determined to make sure that what has been erased, remains forgotten forever,” reads the official logline. “When a young novelist realizes her book editor is one of those able to still remember, she hides him in a room beneath her floorboards. As the world closes in around them, they struggle defiantly to hold onto the truth.” Certainly sounds like a mind*ck right up Charlie Kaufman‘s alley. The writer recently wrote and directed I’M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS for Netflix, which received glowing reviews, including one from our own Chris Bumbray. As for Reed Morano, she most recently helmed THE RHYTHM SECTION, an action thriller that starred Blake Lively as a grieving woman who sets out for revenge after discovering the plane crash that killed her family was a terrorist attack.
