At long last, FX has finally unveiled the first full trailer for its Y: The Last Man TV series. Y: The Last Man is a post-apocalyptic comic-book series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra that follows Yorick Brown and his pet Capuchin monkey Ampersand, the only males who survived a global pandemic that killed every living mammal with a Y chromosome. The adaptation has been in various stages of development for over a decade, and now, we have an action-packed trailer for what I hope becomes a major television event.
Y: The Last Man stars Ben Schnetzer as Yorick Brown, Diane Lane as Congresswoman Jennifer Brown, Amber Tamblyn as Kimberly Cunningham, Marin Ireland as Nora Brady, Diana Bang as Dr. Allison Mann, Elliot Fletcher as Sam Jordan, and Juliana Canfield as Beth Deville. Ashley Romans plays Agent 355 and Olivia Thirlby playing Hero Brown, replacing originally cast Lashana Lynch and Imogen Poots, respectively. The series will follow the survivors in this new world as they struggle with their efforts to restore what was lost and the opportunity to build something better.
Vaughan and Guerra’s epic tale of survival is considered by many to be one of the best apocalypse stories ever told. It feels a little on the nose for this series to be released during a real-life global crisis, but hey, maybe that’s just art imitating life, right? Personally, I’m a big fan of the comic book series and hope that the show touches on many of the weighty themes the original story presents.
Every episode of Y: The Last Man was directed by a woman, with Eliza Clark serving as showrunner. How does the world work once all the men have been killed off? We’ll find out when Y: The Last Man premieres on FX and Hulu on September 13th.
